A couple years ago I lived half in Portland, half in Salt Lake City, and frequently flew to one city for a meeting and back on the same day. (Flying with no luggage = liberating!) Southwest would constantly overbook the Friday 4pm SLC -> PDX flight and need volunteers willing to wait a whole 30 minutes for the 4:30pm flight. I volunteered six times, and probably could have done it more had I been willing to go to the airport early.

I agree with you that it doesn't seem very efficient to keep overbooking a flight that you constantly need volunteers for. Plus, there's always the risk that no one will volunteer, and forcibly bumping someone is bad all the way around.
