Quite a few Obama supporters, myself included, would be willing to work with you to support a balanced budget if the advice you give your fellow Tea Partiers in this post really sank in and the face of the movement changed. Granted, I'm writing this more than a year and a half after your post and the first comments on it and months after a new Congress has been seated. The need to get the nation's financial house in order is more urgent for most people than it was when you posted, but we could still do a lot more to work together, and working together is the only way to get big things done in a sustainable manner. Sanity and grown-up behavior are needed and I hope your words will get people to think about adopting them.

They want less government. They want to shrink or even eliminate the deficit. They thing tax cuts are a cure all. Want to know something? 90% of the people at these rallies, whether they are Tea-baggers, protesters, rednecks, racists, voters, liberals, progressives, angry, happy, gay, straight, black, white, hispanic, asian, conservative, old, young, registered to vote, or not, (need more adjectives?) think that their taxes have gone up in the last two years. Wrong. They received a tax cut from President Obama's hated stimulus. The hated bank bailout is on track to make the government a net profit. Think of it as an investment, which you are so in favor of letting go unregulated.

Finally, you call for tax cuts. You call for cutting the deficit, for fiscal conservatism. (By you, I mean the collective you. I agree fully with this blogger that people bringing their pet issues to play are diluting and handicapping your movement) At the same time, I would guess that a vast majority of your movement does not support cuts to medicare or social security, or reforms such as raising the retirement age. Where will the necessary cuts come from then? The bloated and inefficient military budget? Certainly not. Then what? biofuel subsidies? Education? Infrastructure (oh wait, we can't afford to repave our highways or replace collapsing bridges as it is, and the suggestion that doing so will create jobs and boost our economy by improving efficiency falls on deaf ears)

Beyond the wild contradictions in demands made by the tea-partiers and other conservative groups and protesters, the fact is that whoever they elect on Tuesday is going to have an (R) next to his name. That means, that once in the House or Senate, they will fall under the iron fist of Mitch McConnell or John Boehner. The two who say that the way to improve this country is to tape a brick to the accelerator and point the car towards the edge of the cliff, hoping to collect the salvage fee.

I'm not saying that everything has been perfect. I am saying that today's Republican Party behaves like a two year old whose friend is playing with his favorite fire truck. Sharing isn't a word in their vocabulary, neither is compromise. Do you really think thats what this country needs?

Facts and observations, right? How am I doing?

I love this post. I wish more people started here. And I agree wtih you - the left doesn't do itself any favors with the "teabagger" language either. It just reinforces the anger of those who you are calling out here that stand with (and distract from) the right.

To be fair, TEAParty protesters called themselves "teabaggers" first. We smirk because they obviously didn't know what it meant. Then they kept using the term. It's just funny.

As for being fiscally conservative, I'd love to see a post on what your actual beliefs and ideal plans are for government money. Obviously, no government is not an option, right? So, what's the plan and why?
